We welcomed our young pirates back the week the country honored Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. so we thought we would honor his lessons by incorporating them into ours this first week of preschool by teaching them about the importance of kindness.
From looking at the outside of different colored eggs then opening them to compare how the are alike and different, to reading books about the amazing man who had a dream, to playing dice games encouraging us to high five and speak kindly to our friends, we had a great time learning about how lucky we are to have one another today in school.
We learned about and saw Dr. King speaking at various podiums to crowds of people and used a variety of materials to build him a podium with microphones for more people to hear his speeches as a part of some of our STEM work this week. We also learned that long ago boys and girls who looked differently from one another weren't allowed to go to the same schools together and Dr. King was one of the people who said, 'that's not fair.'
Over the course of the week, the preschoolers often referred to "The King" who told people things were not fair and that we should all be kind to one another. We are so proud of this strong message of kindness as we start back to preschool this semester. We hope the concept of kindness is a constant the rest of the year!
The idea that some of our friends couldn't attend school with us in the days of MLK or even that some of our teachers would not be allowed to be our teachers was so absurd to our preschoolers we felt like celebrating the fact that we get to enjoy being together while all being so different from one another by mixing literal colors with paint on our hands to see the cool new colors we can make by supporting one another and giving each other high fives and holding hands.
One person would get the color yellow, another the color red and together they made orange, etc. This was such a fun way to show the children how much more fun we can have when we use what makes us different to work together and create something new!
As we worked together with our teachers to make a variety of projects with our different colored hands, we also played a game about kindness with magnets where we 'fished for feelings' and found either happy or sad faced emoji's based on the scenario a teacher provided. For example if a friend called us a name that hurt our feelings, it would make us feel...sad [so grab the sad emoji] but if they told us they were glad we were friends we would fish out the happy emoji.
Using our people colored crayons and colored pencils a lot this week we tried to stay true to our friends and families and celebrate all the Colors of Us. We hope to continue to boost each other up the way we did this week using compliments to learn how to raise our friends and even teachers up using some boards and STEM work!

- Don't forget you will need to just bring in enough Valentines on Valentine's Day for the class and they do not need to be addressed but can simply have your child's name on them for the exchange on Valentine's Day in class. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact us.
- Remember to mark you calendars for no preschool the week of February 16th - 23rd due to multiple changes in the high school schedule.
- February 21st and 22nd is the state gymnastics meet at PHS, details will be coming with start times, you may want to check it out with your preschooler!
