Dr. Seuss just turned 114 on Friday and we celebrated all week long with lots and lots of Dr. Seuss stories as well as projects, games, and more! We heard a terrific Star of the Week poster and then jumped into a little Cat in the Hat. We made Thing 1 and Thing 2 and lots of patterns for writing and math and words for pre-reading.
Our first reading activity was to cut apart the 'cat's' hat on the lines and then line up the letters of our names in order.
Then we read, The Lorax, and made lots and lots of Truffula Trees out of puffy paint and tissue paper to 'planted' them around the day.
After our trees we made red and white patterns with paint and then counted out One Fish, Two Fish, some Red Fish and Blue Fish.
We wrote out letters to rhymes from some of these famous tales before moving on to science where we mixed colors and watched them absorb onto paper towels.
After our science experiment we did a little stem work building Cat in the Hat patterned structures out of index cards and small red cups for the red and white patterns of the famous hat.
We continued the patterns with a phonics activity which allowed the children to listen to the sounds of words and then sorted these words to only glue the words down on the children's hats they had in front of them making sure on their hat they had either a list of, 'stop, hop, mop, top' or 'bat, cat, sat, hat', etc.
After that we made our own masks in whatever color patterns we wanted and glued down whiskers and some children changed the color of their cats as well.
Lots of activities this week allowed us time to have the children sort fish and truffula trees by color, numbers, letters and so on. After that we mixed art and science by blowing paint with straw across paper to make crazy character hair.
To end the day we melted more of the Grinch's heart. We grew the heart with a balloon and then melted them with vinegar later too.
What's Coming Up?This coming week we will have lots of fun at the circus! We have so many fun activities lined up for a day at the carnival.
Fall 2018 preschool registration will be next week. Hard copies of paperwork will go home on Monday, the 12th as well as an email.
