We are SUPER excited to be back at school!

Super kids with super powers were the topic of preschool this week as we jumped back in to school with a wonderful Star of the Week presentation.  The children remembered our Welcome Songs and how to work on the Today Board as well.  It was great to get back into our structure.

This was our first week back at Pirate Pete Preschool and we had a blast learning all about what it takes to be a super hero kid at school.  We worked on matching upper and lower case letters in a variety of ways this week to help our little ones become more 'powerful' readers.

We talked about what we might want to be called if we became a super hero and what our super powers would be and how we would help people.  The teachers were able to write down whatever the children said so we hope people at home enjoyed reading these sheets!

We made super-hero puppets for a little take-home dramatic play.  Hopefully the children are playing with them and enjoying their capes as well.  We had the best time this week decorating their super capes and then watching the children fly around the room all day this week with these many forms of dramatic play.

We worked on our small muscles in our fingers by filling in the power blasts for some super heroes on paper.  The children used their fingers to fill in circles on pictures of heroes with ink from ink pads.

Then, we got up and moved around with a super hero training obstacle course that involved weaving in and out of lazer beams, then crawling through tunnels and Hulk smashing some towers down.  It was loads of fun!

We also had fun this week acting out super powers like flying, stomping and smashing, running really fast and swimming in the ocean like Aquaman.

We raced 'Balloon Heroes' for some science action this week and the children worked on creating their own balloon rockets all over the room and raced them to see how fast they could get their balloons to go around the classroom.  Here is a video of how to recreate this fun experiment at home.
We went out into the hallway for some more exercise this week that is easily recreated at home in any hallway you have as well.  We taped streamers in various patterns and asked the children to climb over and crawl under the 'beams'.

We built shields like Captain America this week and learned how someone would use a shield to protect them from things that might be flying towards them.

We used magnetic powers to find various items around the room that are magnetic and were able to used our magnetic magic wands to understand the concept of magnets and what makes something magnetic or not magnetic.
We talked a lot about what makes a super hero and what the word villain means as well.  We learned that villains can try to do someone harm and germs are like the villains of our classroom.
We discussed how we could fight the germ villains by washing our hands and using our elbows to cough, etc. and then took out our magic germ detecting light to search for germ villains on our hands and then washed hands to see if all the germs were removed under the special light.
We read a few books this week about heroes and what makes them special and looked for how we can emulate those quality characteristics by telling the truth, being kind and helping others.
For a variety of writing activities this week we worked on practicing writing letters and following lines to get super heroes from one side of the paper to another.
We counted objects and matched numbers as well for number recognition and math class and worked on writing numbers too.

After some more Hulk Smashing this week we played puzzles on iPads together and also created a super hero comic book as a class as well.  The kids helped create a story as a class then we recorded ourselves telling the story and were able to watch it back together on our big screen.  If this is something your child was interested in, here is a video to show you how to work the app.

We got some new toys this year for our preschool and we used them to build super hero fortresses and rescue people to take them to the hero hospital as well.

What's Coming Up?

This coming week we will be learning about Dinosaurs.  Don't forget Feb. 16th and 19th there will be no preschool.  So save those dates!
