Growing up Pirates!

We had an amazing week learning all about our future selves!
The children had visitors from fire fighters and and helped one another put out pretend flames and we read many books about fire safety, firehouses and the fire fighter uniform.

We learned about chefs and pretended to cook food and make a variety of food items out of play doh and made various food dishes in our play kitchen.

We did reading activities as dentists this week and cleaned our laminated teeth after searching for various letters and erasing them at the teacher's command.

We acted as police officers as we took our finger prints and used magnifying glasses to see the differences between the fingers on our hands and other preschoolers in our class.

We worked on being teachers with math puzzles and talked a lot about what the children believe teachers do for children.
We also had one of our Palatine High School librarians come to read to us and explain what she does to help people find great books to read.

After she left, we read books to one another all throughout the classroom and enjoyed pretending to be librarians and teachers.

We talked about doctors this week and helped take care of some teddy bears who needed letters on their heads, legs and tummies.  The children worked their fingers opening up the band aids given to help them 'fix' the bears.

By Friday we ended the letters of the week for the year.  We challenged the children to write as many letters as they could and were pleased to see some of them take the time to write each letter of the alphabet in order.  They have come so far this year and we are so excited for them as they get ready for kindergarten!

We learned about the job of a florist and made clothes pin patterns as petals on some flowers the teachers made for this activity.

The children worked on their fine motor skills as they threaded string through holes in flower petals.

Our fire fighter friends showed the children the parts of the fire fighter uniform as we talked about how a fire fighter wears special clothes and it protects them from fire the way snow suits protect us from the cold.
We gave high fives to the fire fighter with all of his gear on as we could no longer see his face but to help the children see he is still the same guy underneath the mask.
We even got to see the fire engine outside!

All in all, this week we had a ball 'driving' to work on scooters and 'cooking' food in the kitchen and being professional athletes like soccer and basketball players.

What's Coming Up?This coming week we will be talking about going to the farm.  We have most of the rest of the month focused on various animals from a variety of places with each week spending time on another place to find animals.
